Lyrical Philosophies

We've been out of blog practice for a few weeks; time to ease back in with something that will get us thinking about ourselves in ways we don't usually. So, onward and upward.

Many of you use music as a gateway. To sanity, to serenity, to solace and/or to solitude. Music, to many of you, is an escape from the harsh realities of teenage life.

So, now it is also going to be a tool in which you come to a greater understanding of how you see the world, and how you see yourself.

Think about all the music you love to listen to. Specifically, think about the lyrics to songs you love. Now, I want you to pick one or two songs that adequately encapsulate how you feel about life, your life. Of course, like a quote, nothing can COMPLETELY "sum up" your entire life--I understand that. But many songs, either through explicit or implied messages in lyrics, can at least provide a concrete example of either what you want out of life, what you want out love and how you want to be perceived, taken, understood etc. These are the key concepts I am looking for.

So, your task this week is to tell us about a song, copy a few of the refrains/chorus/passages, and explicate their meaning(s) to you.

Try to pick ones that have some depth and that will provide a deeper understanding of your innate beliefs. (450-500 words/70pts)

  1. Fall!

Now the dark begins to rise
Save your breath, it's far from over
Leave the lost and dead behind
Now's your chance to run for cover
I don't want to change the world,
I just want to leave it colder
Light the fuse and burn it up
Take the path that leads to nowhere

All is lost again, but I'm not giving in...

I will not bow, I will not break
I will shut the world away
I will not fall, I will not fade
I will take your breath away

    Fall!

Watch the end through dying eyes
Now the dark is taking over
    Show me where forever dies
Take the fall and run to heaven

All is lost again, but I'm not giving in...

I will not bow, I will not break
I will shut the world away
I will not fall, I will not fade
I will take your breath away

    And I'll survive, paranoid
I have lost the will to change
And I'm not proud, cold blooded fake
I will shut the world away

    Fall!

I will not bow, I will not break
I will shut the world away
I will not fall, I will not fade
I will take your breath away

    And I'll survive, paranoid
I have lost the will to change
And I'm not proud, cold blooded fate
I will shut the world away

    Fall!
The song I choose which is in my top favorites is I Will Not Bow by Breaking Benjamin. I have chosen this song because it really speaks to me. It is all about a man who is dying from the inside and he does not have the will to change it. He would rather turn his back and walk away from his troubles. I have felt the same way before wished I could have ended it. I have not made that choice not to due to what was at stake in my life. When you see deaths face to many times you tends to just end it. Just the quote “Look to a brighter future but do not forget the darken past” has opened a few doorways. With that said I will continue down my path and see what I can make of myself. Life is about mistakes and choices, experiences gains and experiences lost. Make the right choice and follow what matters most to you and only you do not let anyone stand in your way.

  2. Last Resort-Papa Roach

Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort
    Suffocation, no breathing
Don't give a f*ck if I cut my arm bleeding

    This is my last resort
Cut my life into pieces, I've reached my last resort
    Suffocation, no breathing
Don't give a f*ck if I cut my arm bleeding
Do you even care if I die bleeding?
Would it be wrong? Would it be right?
If I took my life tonight? Chances are that I might
Mu dilation out of sight, and I'm contemplating suicide

Cause I'm losing my sight, losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Losing my sight, losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine

I never realized I was spread too thin
Till it was too late and I was empty within
Hungry, feeding on my chaos and living in sin
Downward spiral, where do I begin?
It all started when I lost my mother
No love for myself and no love for another
Searching to find a love upon a higher level
Finding nothing but questions and devils

Cause I'm losing my sight, losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Losing my sight, losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine

    Nothing's alright, nothing is fine
    I'm running and I'm crying
    I'm crying, I'm crying
    I'm crying, I'm crying

    I ... can't ... go ... on ... living ... this ... way

Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort
    Suffocation, no breathing
Don't give a f*ck if I cut my arm bleeding

Would it be wrong? Would it be right?
If I took my life tonight? Chances are that I might
Mutilation out of sight, and I'm contemplating suicide

Cause I'm losing my sight, losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Losing my sight, losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine

    Nothing's alright, nothing is fine
    I'm running and I'm crying

    I ... CAN'T ... GO ... ON ... LIVING ... THIS ... WAY

Can't go on ... living this way
    Nothing's alright!

This song is a great way to describe how I felt when I lost everything and i was left with no one. My boyfriend left me my mom kicked me out and my dad was never there. I had no where to turn so I had thoughts of suicide. I know its not the best way to go but I over came all those obstacles and I went back to my mom and apologized because I needed her as much as she needed me.

  3. The one song I could think of would solve all my problems so I had to go with "If I Ruled the World" by Nas and Lauryn Hill. Here
    are some lyrics.

Imagine smoking weed in the streets without cops harassing
Imagine going to court with no trial
Lifestyle cruising blue behind my waters
No welfare supporters more conscious of the way we raise our daughters
Days are shorter, nights are colder
Feeling like life is over, these snakes strike like a cobra
The world's hot my son got knocked evidentaly
It's elementary, they want us all gone eventually
Trooping out of state for a plate knowledge
of coke was cooked without the garbage we'd all have the top dollars
    Imagine everybody flashing, fashion
Designer clothes, lacing your click up with diamond vogues
Your people holding dough, no parole
No rubbers, go in raw imagine law with no undercovers
Just some thoughts for the mind
I take a glimpse into time
watch the blimp read "The World Is Mine

In this song it mainly speaks about how they want the world to be ruled. They speak about the racists cops and the government, or
if you want to say the MAN. It gives examples of racism and how they want peace all over the world and everyone getting along and
we would have no problems. My favorite line in this song is "The world's hot my son got knocked evidentaly It's elementary, they
want us all gone eventually" It means you can see I did something wrong but it doesnt matter because the man wants me gone anyway.
This is mainly pointing towards black people. The song really makes me think I rule the world and anything can happen. This can
take me to a happy place whenever I listen to it. One thing about me I do wish that everyone gets along well. This will solve
almost all problems because we will face our problems as a team. This is one reason I love the military because they become your
family and what your in they are too, and they will help you no matter what.

  4. First Day Of My Life by Bright eyes

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
    Now I don’t know where I am
    I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I’d let you know
    That these things take forever
    I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you'd just woke up
And you said “this is the first day of my life
    I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
    And I’d probably be happy”

So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time is different
I mean I really think you like me

This is one of my most favorite songs, and i picked it for this blog because its currently hitting an emotional nerve with me anyway.
When i hear it, i think of the different friendships i have/had with people and how even though some have ended, most have gotten better.
The part that says "I think i was blind before i met you" reminds me of how much ive learned from my friends over time, almost feels like i didnt know anything before, and now my eyes are open.
"But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home"
This part reminds be of my many burned bridges, and the ones i wish i cud come back across.
Ive had alot of good times with alot of good people, and its nice to kick back once ina while and remember them.
    "I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
    And I’d probably be happy”
There are some people in my life that i love more than they even realize, and life is so short, that i really am glad to know certain people because who knows how life would have been without them. These are the same people you know youll always have a good time with no matter what, the same people you would bring to the desert with you.
"But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery"
This part reminds me to be realistic, not everythings just gunna happen, sometimes you have to go an get it.

  5. "& I swear on everything when I leave this earth, it's gonna be on both feet, never knees in the dirt." -Lil Wayne Mr. Carter."

This particular lyric from this song stood out to me in a powerful way. It actually meant something to me, and ever since I heard it way back it has been my favorite quote. It means to me that I will never lose my pride. Pride to me is an important factor in life. I always have my head up and I would give it all up just for my pride. I guess it's not always a good thing but this quote gives it strong and powerful meaning. It's saying that he's going to die like a man no matter what.

"I gotta feel alive even if it kills me, promise to always give you me...the real me."-Drake, Light Up

This lyric means alot to me because I can't imagine being anyone else but me. People come off as fake and I can tell, I guess it's a gift, because I look at them and never wish to be fake. Even if the world becomes a two faced planet I'll always just be me. The real me.
